Surface Design Classes - Upcoming Workshops

Each of the individual classes will focus on a particular technique or group of techniques. All of these classes build upon each other to help the student learn a complete surface design vocabulary. Yet each class taken independently will give the student familiarity with mixing and using dyes in a general way. There will be design exercises to loosen the creativity and several activities to look at the world of design in new ways.

Suzanne loves teaching and sharing her enthusiasm and knowledge of surface design. She encourages students to open to their own creativity, working within a framework of intent.

Beginning Weaving
Private and Semi-Private Classes

If you’ve decided to learn to weave, I can teach you. Over 4 weeks, you will receive 12 hours private instruction learning the basics of weaving. You will choose your project and yarns, warp the loom and weave your first project. Call Suzanne to start weaving! $250 + materials

More advanced study is also available

May 16-17 - Brush, Stamp, and Roll
Students will experiment with thickened dyes to paint and print on fabrics. We'll make our own stamps, cut simple silk-screens, print with found objects, and experiment with mono-printing in addition to painting with brushes and sponges.

$180.00

May 24-25 - Painted Warps
In one day, paint up to 3 warps with colorful procion dyes. Use for scarves, placemats, clothing, and more. Learn the techniques that never fail.

$90.00

June 19-21 - Coloring Outside the Lines: Fiber Reactive Dyes 101
Play with color in the dye bath and recapture that pleasurable feeling of opening a new box of crayons on the first day of school. This introduction to dyeing with fiber reactive dyes will open up a world of possibilities, expanding your color confidence and palette. Topics in this 3 day class will include dyeing in a gradated sequence to obtain controlled shifts of values or hues, low-water immersion dyeing for spontaneous effects, and manipulating low-water immersion dyeing to obtain multi-colored yardage.

$270.00

July 18-19 - Simply Silkscreen
Silk-screening is a satisfying way to produce fabric with repeat designs. In this 2 day class, you will learn to make strong graphic images with incredibly simple tools such as masking tape, freezer paper, and inexpensive, pre-assembled silk-screens. Students will develop their own designs and experiment with applying them to fabric with media as diverse as textile paint, thickened dyes, and discharge paste.

$180.00

August 8-9 - Irresistible Resists
Surface design isn't just about where the dye goes, but also where it doesn't go. In this series of classes on resists, students will produce compelling cloth using a variety of the resist methods listed in the classes below.

$180.00

August 22-23 - Fold, Poke, Clamp, and Wrap
Explore resists involving fabric manipulation in this class. We'll clamp yardage, tie it, sew it, and wrap it onto poles to prepare it for dyeing or over dyeing.

$180.00

September 5-6 - Liquid Resists
We'll experiment with a variety of resist solutions, including corn and potato dextrin and cold wax.

$180.00

September 19-20 - Vanishing Acts: Discharging Dyes
Safe discharge chemicals can be used in solution or as a paste to selectively remove or transform areas of color from dyed yardage. Students will learn the basics of safe discharge techniques and learn to combine techniques we use for applying thickened dye (silk-screening, painting) and for readying fabric for resists (fabric manipulation, liquid resists) with the discharge process.

$180.00

September 29-October 3 - Surface Design Intensive
Surface Design Intensive will give students information about how to dye and to paint the colors they need for their unique visions. In addition to learning to immersion-dye and to paint with dyes, students will experiment with printing, resists, discharges, silk-screening, and sewing techniques. Students will leave with luscious useable yardage, but more importantly, with the information necessary to dye what they need in the future.

$450.00
