Wordworking Classes
The wood studio, located below the gallery, is spacious and especially well suited for teaching. With over 30 years experience in his craft, John is an excellent educator and mentor to those wishing to increase both their knowledge and practical skills.  Whether you spend a few hours, a day, or a week soaking up the wood experience with him, you will come away satisfied with what you have gained.
John sometimes co-teaches with Gregory Paolini whose work and wood working articles have been featured in numerous books, magazines, and newspapers, including Fine Woodworking Magazine, Woodwork, and Cabinetmaker magazines.

Hand Planing
Saturday April 10 9am-5pm

Nothing says old world craftsmanship like the whoosh of a well tuned hand plane, in the hands of a skilled craftsman, taking a gossamer shaving off a board. In this full day class, Master woodworker John Gernandt will instruct students about various planes and when to use them, how to tune and set up a hand plane, review sharpening, and learn proper technique for edge and face jointing with a hand plane. Troubleshooting and Q&A will be addressed throughout the day. We encourage you to bring your own hand plane!
Veneering

Veneer can be intimidating, but it’s a technique used on some of the finest pieces of furniture in the world! Learning the techniques for successful veneering will open up a new world of woodworking, allowing you to work with exotic and highly figured woods,and creating furniture and shapes not possible with solid wood. Join Master woodworker John Gernandt for this full day workshop where we’ll cover flattening and selection of veneers; seaming and book matching techniques; adhesives for veneering; and options for application. We’ll also demonstrate vacuum veneering technique. Get ready to conquer veneer!
Comprehensive Finishing

Finishing skills make the difference between a nice project and a phenomenal one. Join Master woodworker John Gernandt for this full day workshop. Students will learn about various finishes, their pros and cons, and easy ways to apply those finishes. You’ll learn fool proof methods for dealing with blotchy woods, and ways to make your own stains and top coats. We’ll also cover pre-finishing techniques and share pro-shop tips to ensure fantastic results. Upon completion, students will have the skill and know how to apply silky smooth finishes worthy of the finest galleries!
Bending Wood

There comes a time when woodworkers are ready to step outside of the box, and walk away from straight, square pieces of lumber. If you’re ready to take on the challenge of curves, this class will ensure you succeed! Master woodworker John Gernandt will show you how to bend and shape wood using laminations, kerf bending, hot steam, and hot pipe methods. In addition, we’ll demonstrate how to utilize a vacuum press to eliminate clamps, and how to pull off the infamous tapered bent lamination!
Sharpening
Saturday, May 29 9AM - Noon

Are you frustrated with tools that just don't cut it anymore? Sharp tools make woodworking easier and enjoyable. Join Master woodworker John Gernandt for this hands on workshop which will cover a variety of methods to make your tools razor sharp, including sandpaper on glass, water stones, and slow speed grinding machines. Feel free to bring one dull chisel or plane iron to class.
